7 Ways to Begin Again
There are moments in life when the map we’ve been following suddenly no longer works.
The loss of someone we love. A divorce. Retirement. A move. A change in our health. Children leaving home. The end of a career or relationship. Sometimes the change is something we chose, and sometimes it is something we never would have chosen.
Either way, we can find ourselves standing in the middle of a life that looks very different from the one we knew, wondering:
Who am I now? And where do I go from here?
At SoulRise, we believe these seasons of transition can become sacred thresholds. Not because they aren’t painful, but because even in the midst of change, something new can begin to emerge.
Science of Mind teaches that there is a Creative Presence within us and around us that is always available. We don’t have to have all the answers to begin working with it.
Sometimes beginning again simply means taking the next small step.
Here are seven ways to start.
1. Give Yourself Permission to Be Where You Are
You don’t have to rush to “get over it.”
A major life transition can change your routines, relationships, identity and even your sense of what the future was supposed to look like.
Allow yourself to acknowledge what has changed.
You can be grateful for your life and still grieve what was. You can have faith and still have difficult days. You can believe something new is possible without knowing what that something is yet.
Healing begins with meeting yourself where you are.
2. Create a Little Space for Stillness
When life feels uncertain, our minds often want to figure everything out at once.
Instead, try creating a few quiet minutes each day.
Sit somewhere comfortable. Place your hand over your heart. Take several slow breaths and remind yourself:
There is a Presence within me that knows the way forward, even when I cannot see it yet.
You don’t need an immediate answer.
Simply practice becoming quiet enough to hear yourself again.
3. Release What No Longer Belongs to This Chapter
Transitions often leave us holding onto things that belonged to our former life.
Sometimes those are physical possessions. Sometimes they are expectations, roles, habits or beliefs about who we thought we were supposed to be.
Ask yourself:
What am I ready to lovingly release?
You don’t have to clear everything out overnight.
Choose one drawer. One commitment. One old story.
Creating space is a powerful way of telling yourself—and Life—
I am making room for what comes next.
4. Change Something in Your Environment
Our surroundings affect us more than we realize.
When life changes but our environment remains frozen in the past, it can sometimes make moving forward more difficult.
Open the windows.
Move a chair.
Bring flowers into the room.
Clear your bedside table.
Create a peaceful corner for reading, prayer or meditation.
From a Feng Shui perspective, changing our physical environment can help shift stagnant energy and create visible evidence that something new is beginning.
You don’t have to redesign your entire home.
Move something. Clear something. Beautify something.
Let your space begin to reflect where you are going—not only where you have been.
5. Ask a Different Question
When we’re hurting, it’s natural to ask:
Why did this happen?
Sometimes there is no satisfying answer.
A more empowering question may be:
What wants to emerge through me now?
Or:
Who am I becoming?
You don’t have to know the answer today.
Simply asking a new question can begin opening a new doorway.
6. Don’t Begin Again Alone
Healing doesn’t have to happen in isolation.
Find people who can sit with you without trying to fix you.
Have coffee with a friend. Join a class. Attend a gathering. Find a spiritual community. Talk with someone who understands the kind of transition you’re experiencing.
Sometimes we borrow hope from one another until we can feel our own again.
There is tremendous healing in being seen, heard and reminded:
You still belong.
7. Choose One Small Thing That Represents Life
You don’t need a five-year plan.
Choose one thing.
Plant something.
Take a morning walk.
Sign up for a class.
Plan lunch with someone you love.
Watch the sunrise.
Buy yourself flowers.
Create something.
Do something that quietly says:
I am still here. My life is still unfolding.
Beginning again rarely arrives as one dramatic moment.
More often, it happens through a hundred small choices to participate in life again.
A Simple SoulRise Practice: The Next Step
Find a quiet place and take three slow breaths.
Place your hand over your heart and say:
I honor what has been.
I bless what I am releasing.
I trust the Life within me.
I do not need to see the entire path.
I am open to my next step.
Something new is rising within me now.
Then ask yourself:
What is one loving thing I can do for myself today?
Whatever comes to mind, begin there.
You don’t have to reinvent your whole life today.
You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going.
You only have to be willing to take the next step.
At SoulRise Center for Spiritual Living — Teaching Chapter, we believe there is something within each of us that remains whole, creative and connected to a Power greater than ourselves—even during life’s most difficult transitions.
Sometimes the ending we never wanted becomes the doorway to a life we never imagined.
