What Is Science of Mind?
A Simple Introduction for Spiritual Seekers
Maybe you believe in something greater than yourself, but you’re not sure what to call it.
Maybe you grew up with religion and still treasure parts of that tradition, while other parts no longer fit.
Or maybe you simply have a sense that there is more—more connection, more meaning, more possibility—and you’re curious about exploring it.
If any of that sounds familiar, Science of Mind may feel like an invitation to look at spirituality in a new way.
So, What Is Science of Mind?
Science of Mind is a spiritual philosophy developed by Ernest Holmes in the early 20th century and taught today through Centers for Spiritual Living.
At its heart is a simple idea:
There is One Infinite Presence moving through all of life—and you are part of it.
Some people call this Presence God. Others may call it Spirit, Divine Intelligence, Universal Love, Source, or simply something greater than ourselves.
Science of Mind doesn’t ask everyone to use the same language.
Instead, it invites us to explore our own relationship with the Divine and discover spiritual principles that can be practiced and experienced in everyday life.
Your Thoughts Matter
One of the foundational teachings of Science of Mind is that our inner life influences how we experience our outer life.
Our thoughts, beliefs, expectations and deeply held patterns can affect how we see ourselves, the choices we make and the possibilities we are able to recognize.
That doesn’t mean we caused every difficult thing that has happened to us.
And it certainly doesn’t mean we should use spirituality to blame ourselves when life is painful.
Instead, Science of Mind gives us a powerful question:
Given where I am today, what do I choose now?
We may not be able to change yesterday, but we can begin creating a different relationship with today.
You Are Not Separate From the Divine
Perhaps one of the most beautiful ideas in Science of Mind is that the Divine isn’t somewhere far away.
The same Life that moves through nature, through creation and through the universe is present within you.
You don’t have to earn your connection to it.
Spiritual practice becomes less about trying to get God to listen and more about becoming still enough to recognize the Presence that is already here.
That can change the way we approach prayer, healing, relationships and even life’s most difficult transitions.
A Spirituality That Welcomes Questions
Science of Mind isn’t about having all the answers.
In fact, Ernest Holmes described the philosophy as being “open at the top,” leaving room for continuing revelation, discovery and growth.
That makes it especially meaningful for people who consider themselves spiritual seekers.
You can bring your questions.
You can bring your doubts.
You can bring wisdom from other spiritual traditions.
And you can bring your own life experience.
The invitation is not simply to believe something because someone tells you it is true.
It is to practice, experience and discover what is true for you.
What Does This Look Like in Everyday Life?
Science of Mind can be practiced in surprisingly ordinary moments.
It might look like noticing a fearful thought and consciously choosing one rooted in possibility.
It might mean beginning your morning in gratitude rather than immediately reaching for your phone.
It could be spending a few quiet minutes in meditation, connecting with nature, practicing affirmative prayer or becoming more intentional about the energy you bring into a relationship.
Sometimes the spiritual practice is simply asking:
Who do I want to be in this moment?
Because transformation doesn’t always happen in the big moments.
Often, it begins with one thought, one breath and one conscious choice.
Try This: A 2-Minute Practice
Find a comfortable place and become still.
Place one hand over your heart and take three slow breaths.
As you breathe, silently say:
There is a Power and Presence greater than I am.
Take another breath.
That Presence is here with me now.
And another.
I am open to peace, guidance and possibility.
Then ask yourself:
What quality do I choose to bring into my life today?
Maybe it’s peace.
Love.
Courage.
Trust.
Joy.
Compassion.
Or simply presence.
Choose one word and carry it with you throughout your day.
When you find yourself slipping into fear, frustration or old patterns, return to that word.
Return to your breath.
Return to the Presence within.
